Official way. It is necessary that standard recovery be installed. We load the firmware onto the memory card in packed form, and then rename the version in the archive name (for example, instead of the original 1.17.40.1106 we put 1.17.40.1107). Then the device should find this file itself (if not, then reboot).
If the file was not found, you need to boot into recovery mode (turn off the smartphone and hold down the power key and volume button in the down position), press Wipe data/factory reset – Wipe Cache partition – Apply update from SDcard.
How to find out your firmware version on Asus ZenFone: Go to the settings - scroll down to “Help” (or a similar name) and click - at the very bottom “Software information” - this will be the system version.
August 31, 2016 ASUS officially announced the availability of a manual update for the popular ZenFone 2 ZE551ML smartphones to Android 6.0 Marshmallow (aka Android M).
To install the new firmware, you must have Android 5.0 (Android L) firmware version installed V2.20.40.194 or later. If this is not the case, then you should first update to the latest available version of Android L and then flash Android M. Currently, the latest version available is 2.20.40.198 , published 10/14/2016
Features of update methods
First of all, you need to remember that all available firmware are divided into so-called regional (CN, JP) and international (WW). Firmware can only be installed using the official method in the same region as the already installed firmware.
For Russian users, you must use WW firmware. At the moment, the latest available firmware for Android 6.0 is UL-Z00A-WW-4.21.40.223-user.zip.
There are 4 ways to flash ASUS smartphones:
- Updating over existing firmware of the same type (official method)
- Firmware over existing version using MOFD method
- Installing firmware via ADB Sideload
- Installing firmware via fastboot + recovery image with further firmware via ADB sideload.
The last two methods are intended for cases when you have a gray phone, for example, brought from China, and you need to change the firmware region from CN to WW. This method also allows you to flash the correct firmware if another one was previously installed by mistake. The same method fixes the missing System Update button when updating via OTA (over the air), and also fixes the “signature verification failed” error.
But in this article we are talking about flashing the firmware using the standard method, provided that you have a phone with official WW firmware and a locked bootloader.
Firmware process
The official firmware method is very simple:
- Download and install ASUS_Android_USB_drivers_for_Windows drivers from the official ASUS website.
- Download the new firmware file from the same site
- Connect the TA (telephone) to the PC with a USB cable as an MTP device.
- Place the downloaded file UL-Z00A-WW-4.21.40.223-user.zip in the root of the phone’s internal memory or microSD memory card.
- Disconnect the USB cable by pulling it out of the TA, receive a notification on the TA screen about the availability of a new software version.
- Run the update (NF must be at least 60% charged)
- The TA will reboot itself into recovery mode and flash the bootloader, then the main image. Installation may take 15-20 minutes.
- After the phone automatically reboots, the process of optimizing installed applications will begin. The more of them you have, the more time it will take.
Important notes about Android 6.0
- The new firmware does not support APP2SD, that is, transferring applications to an external card. BEFORE installing the firmware, transfer all applications to the internal memory.
- Some individual applications from Android 5.0 will be removed due to the fact that they have been replaced with similar ones built into the Android 6.0 OS.

Instructions for installing custom CWM/TWRP recovery on Asus Zenfone 5 (A500CG, A501CG, A500KL) and also obtaining Root rights (super user rights).
Firmware Asus Zenfone 5 (A500CG, A501CG, A500KL)
For owners of firmware below 1_14_40_50, first flash to 1_14_40_50 or WW_1_15_40_20, only then to the new firmware!
Official phone firmware method (from ASUS)
When moving CN—>WW, all data disappears; when updating TW—>TW, CN—>CN, WW—>WW, the data remains.
0. Download the firmware in *.zip format (you can download the firmware on the official website, select OS: Android –> Firmware)
1. Connect the phone to your PC using the USB cable that comes with the kit and unpack the previously downloaded firmware file, you should get something like this UL-ASUS_T00F-WW-1.15.40.20-user.zip.secure or ***.zip
2. If the name contains UL-ASUS_T00F-WW-1.15.40.20-user.zip.secure, then rename it to UL-ASUS_T00F-WW-1.15.40.20-user.zip, then copy it to the internal memory of the smartphone.
3. Disconnect the phone from the PC and the system will see the update itself - you need to confirm by selecting the update itself and after that the firmware will begin.
Notes:
If you are trying to flash it, but you don’t see the firmware, then double-check, everything should be like this: UL-ASUS_T00F-CN-1.15.40.21-user.zip, instead of 1.15.40.21 version of your firmware
In future updates, nothing needs to be changed in the name.
When upgrading from CH –> WW or TW –> WW firmware, you must change the file name from UL-ASUS_T00F-WW-1.15.40.20-user to UL-ASUS_T00F-CN-1.15.40.20-user
If the firmware for T00J and T00F is the same, then in the unpacked firmware you need to change the file name from UL-ASUS_T00F-WW-1.15.40.20-user to the version for your device.
If everything is correct, but you can’t see the firmware, then reboot your smartphone.
Firmware for ASUS ZenFone 5 via ADB
To flash the latest firmware, unpack the downloaded archive into the phone's memory, turn it off and on again. The system itself will detect updates and offer to flash it.
You can install the latest firmware by repeating steps 8-15 using UL_ASUS_T00F_WW_1_16_40_50.zip
How to install custom CWM/TWRP recovery on Asus Zenfone 5 (A500CG, A501CG, A500KL)
First of all, we need to download ADB, if you have not done this yet, download it from the link above.
Then you need to download the installation file of the custom recovery for your phone to your PC, here I offer you a choice (you only need one) zenfone_5_cwm_installer.zip or zenfone_5_twrp_installer.zip
1. Make root in any convenient way
2. Install Busybox
3. Enable USB debugging
4. Using any file manager with root access, rename the file “recovery-from-boot.p” in the system folder to “recovery-from-boot.bak”
5. Unpack files from the archive with CWM or TWRP into the same folder (I installed CWM for myself)
6. Connect Zenfone 5 to the computer, the phone must be turned on, confirm the request that we trust this computer if we have not done so before
7. Run the install.bat file in the folder with adb, confirm the request to obtain root rights on the device itself
8. After which the phone should reboot with custom recovery already installed
How to enter custom recovery:
1. Turn off the phone
2. Press and hold the power key until vibration response occurs
3. Release the power key, hold down the volume down button
How to get ROOT rights to Asus Zenfone 5 (A500CG, A501CG, A500KL)
I would like to note right away that the author of the file specifically indicated that this file is not suitable for devices with the CN version of the firmware! He is not responsible for the accident! For the CN version there is a separate“*.apk” .
1. Download the program RootZenfone-1.2r.apk
2. Install it on your smartphone, having first checked that in “Settings” -> “Security” the “unknown sources” checkbox is checked, which allows the installation of applications on the Asus Zenfone 5 phone from unknown sources.
3. Turn off WiFi. We switch the device to “airplane mode” (to prevent any penetration of the device into the Internet when “*.apk” is running).
4. Launch the installed application. A warning will appear stating “...You are at risk...I am not responsible...etc.” Click “Do not ask” (“leave me alone” in Russian).
5. Then select the program for assigning root rights (I recommend SuperSU) and press the button below (With the inscription “Come on already! Do ROOT!”)
6. The demo mode will then begin. When it comes to the image of the device labeled Zenfone 5, quickly press (hold) the power button and select “reboot”.
7. After the reboot, return to the “Root Zenfone” program and grant it root rights (click “grant” in the “SuperSU” question window). Then click the “After updating, save ROOT” button in the program.
This way you will not lose your root rights after the OTA update.
Periodically, every device running Android OS needs to update the current version of the operating system. Of course, even without this, the gadget will remain in working order, but nevertheless, some problems may arise with the old version. Therefore, today we will talk about how to update Android.
Often, when a new model is launched, some software problems remain out of sight of the manufacturer. A conscientious developer always tries to eliminate shortcomings in previously released versions that were identified while using the gadget, and in addition, add new functions that are more user-friendly.
There are also third-party developers who do not work for a particular company that produces mobile devices, but produce their own, unofficial software (custom firmware) for many device models, which may be of even better quality than Android versions directly from the manufacturer.
In addition, devices from little-known manufacturers (usually Chinese) purchased outside the Russian Federation and not properly localized also need firmware updates.
How to update the version (firmware) of Android
Standard procedure
Official updates from the manufacturer are released quite regularly. As a rule, this applies to popular models of gadgets or devices produced by well-known companies.
Such updates are absolutely free, do not require special knowledge from the user and, as a rule, occur automatically. An Internet connection is required to check the firmware and update it.
Go to the main settings, in the section " System", at the very bottom we find the item " About the phone" (May be " About the device"), then open the position " System update" (May be " Update BY", on some models you will need to press the " Check now«):
The display will show " System check“, after which a message will appear indicating that the latest version is available or that it is being used, which means the system has been updated automatically. If this does not happen, then before upgrading to a new version of Android, we find out information about the firmware installed on a specific device. To do this, go back to the “About phone” section and at the very bottom we find the necessary information:
Knowing the current firmware version is necessary to obtain information about the availability of more recent software versions for a specific smartphone/tablet model and the possibility of installing them.
Note: if you are using a gadget whose software does not support the Russian language, then you need to find the items “ About tablet" or " About phone» and look for the necessary information there.
Using third party programs (ROM Manager)
Sometimes downloading an official update via Internet is impossible, and custom firmware cannot be installed this way at all. In this case, one of the best applications used for these purposes - .
Using this program, you can easily create system backups and (in our case) manually update the current version of Android, including on Chinese smartphones.
To work correctly with the program, it is necessary if your device is not rooted.
After launch, the program will ask you to install ClockWorkMod Recovery (CWM), this is a more advanced mod of the standard Recovery Android OS. We agree, and then do the following:
Loading on SD card your device, the required firmware (zip archive format), which can be found on the official website of the developer of our device, launch the utility ROM Manager, then select the menu item “ Install ROM from SD card" Using folder navigation, indicate the path to the archive on your SD card. Now let's activate the button " Save current ROM"(this is done to be able to roll back to the old version if you don’t like the new firmware) and select the “” position:
We agree with the reboot and the program will start the process of rebooting the smartphone in mode CWM and installing new firmware.
Also, the ROM Manager application will help in searching for firmware for a specific device; to do this, select “ Download firmware", and it may well be that there is something more suitable just for you.

Via ClockWorkMod Recovery
It is possible that updating Android using the ROM Manager utility failed, especially this situation is possible on smartphones from Chinese or little-known manufacturers. In this case, you can use the CWM menu.
ClockworkMod Recovery (or CWM Recovery) is an analogue of standard recovery with advanced functions. This utility will not only help you perform a complete reset of the device or install patches for games, but will also update the firmware of your mobile gadget.
CWM supports most Android devices. In fact, every second modern Android smartphone (or tablet) is equipped with Modrecovery CWM. But if your device only has stock (standard) recovery, then install CWM Recovery using the ROM Manager application (see above).
After entering the ClockWorkMod Recovery menu, move using the volume key and first select “ wipe data/factory reset" (to reset all settings to factory settings), then " wipe cache"(to clear the cache). Now we find the line “ install zip from SD card" and confirm the action with the hardware button " Home"or the device power button (it plays the role of the " Yes»):
Note: for some device models, menu operation can be controlled using a sensor.
Next, getting to the point “ choose zip from sd card", indicate the path to the new firmware in the ZIP archive that was saved on the SD card, confirm the choice by clicking " Yes – Install /sdcard/update.zip»:
After completing the steps, the process of flashing our Android device will start. Upon completion, select “ reboot system now"to reboot the device and wait for the device to boot, which can take quite a long period of time.
Important ! Before updating the Android version (firmware), you need to fully charge the device, because the whole process will take about half an hour. During the firmware update, the smartphone will require a lot of energy to correctly complete the task. In addition, the display backlight will be at maximum brightness during the update procedure, and the update process interrupted due to a lack of power can lead to disastrous consequences.
Therefore, before you start updating your device, assess the degree of risk and try to approach the question of how to update the Android version responsibly. Good luck!
