What if you store discs without converting?
However, owners of large hard drives prefer to record the contents of DVDs onto hard drives without changes, but more often only because they contain some kind of anthology or series - there is no point in dividing them into files. In this case, you just need to copy the disc into a separate folder and be sure to give it a name - all folders on the DVD have the same names, so it’s easy to get confused. By the way, even this process is not so simple, and we will explain why later.
If you managed to rewrite the files, then there are no more questions, and the quality of the film is usually such that it can even be easily displayed on a wide TV screen. But full-length discs are not suitable as material for recording “for a long trip” - smartphones and tablets only accept files, and even with reduced quality, so you have to think with less energy and time.
Principles and subtleties of conversion
Files stored on DVDs have several extensions, the most important being VOB. The rest store service data, including the disc screensaver, menus, content with quick transitions, etc. Generally speaking, VOB files can be copied separately to a directory and run with any player. The disk often contains several VOB files, divided according to the “gigabyte per part” principle. When played, they move one into another according to file numbers. If there are several films, then this can be seen by the same numbers. When choosing one desired film from several, remember the number of its initial episode.
A VOB file is encoded in MPEG2 format, usually at high resolution. But this is not enough - often licensed discs are protected from copying, so direct copying of files may not produce results. To copy, you need to use special utilities that can remove various types of protection.
But then it’s easier. Any video file is a container in which video and audio streams are stored. Each of them can be isolated and recorded separately, as well as processed into a different format. It should be noted that miracles do not happen in nature. Having set a goal, how to convert DVD to AVI without losing quality– quality will be lost, both for video and audio. You need to come to terms with this.
Next, using any of the utilities described below, you select the AVI output format. AVI is, figuratively speaking, also a container, and streams inside can be stored in any type of compression. For this purpose, special codec filters or compressors are used. They are called filters or splitters because the utility can use several filters simultaneously during the conversion process, installing them according to the principle of “merging pipes” - one filter performs exactly one operation, then the flow goes to another filter. A splitter can divide a stream into substreams - for example, converting multi-channel audio into stereo or quad.
The main task of video filters is to obtain an image of the next frame, unpack it into its original form and compress it again using its own algorithm. In this case, the rule for creating key and intermediate frames is observed. In general settings, it is important to observe the bitrate, that is, the frame rate per second - it is expressed in kilobits. The bitrate directly depends on the film itself - how many fast or slow scenes it contains. If the movie is “slow”, then LowMotion codecs are selected, otherwise FastMotion. In practice, their confusion can lead to the picture scattering into squares during fast scenes. Synchronization of audio and video is also important, since they are converted separately and then may not be mixed. The final film requires previewing and adjusting the sound to the video - synchronization intervals are set.
Why did you need to know this?
Yes, simply because video conversion used to be done this way - manually, in separate phases. Nowadays, many utilities try to do all this automatically, but most often the result is very poor movie quality. But there are a sea of such utilities, and omnivorous ones at that. If their quality satisfies you, then please:
The common problem with all automatic converters is the lack of settings - sometimes you have to put up with unclear problems: sound escape, strange bands, uncut edges of frames, other people's logos, inability to select an audio track, etc. I would like to note the latest utility - VirtualDub - this utility is an exception to the rule: it can do anything with an AVI file. But only at the last stage of encoding, since it does not process VOB files.
Without leaving the Internet
If you don’t want to tinker with programs, looking for errors in them, you can search, how to convert DVD to AVI online– many services are now moving to the Internet. Take a look, for example, here - www.convertfiles.com/convert/video/VOB-to-AVI.html - nothing complicated. Specify the file name, output formats are automatically selected. The result depends only on luck and the qualifications of the service’s programmers. Another similar resource is www.zamzar.com/convert/vob-to-avi. You can also find Russian resources by choosing how to convert dvd to avi online, but there is too much pathos on them, and the quality is mostly average.
Online services, as a rule, provide even fewer customization options than stand-alone utilities. And the processing speed also leaves much to be desired, because even in the best case, the time to convert a film will be proportional to its duration. We wish you successful searches! And this - to make it easier to search - www.3dnews.ru/download/multimedia.

Why might you need to convert AVI to DVD? Imagine what you want to write down DVD disc, and your source file is in AVI format. It is quite often used to reduce the size of videos. In this case, a convenient DVD to AVI converter can help. Wherein? By downloading "VideoMASTER" once, you can convert video and audio files into the most popular formats. This is very convenient for storing, transmitting and recording various audio and video materials.
We offer a video tutorial on converting AVI to DVD format:
To convert AVI to DVD, you need to follow several steps. Step-by-step instruction below will help you with this.
Step 1. Download the VideoMASTER converter
To start working on converting formats and recording them, you need to install VideoMASTER on your PC. It will take no more than 5 minutes to download the DVD to AVI converter or any other popular format. Please note that download speed depends on the speed of your Internet connection. After downloading, install the program by running the download file. Don't forget to pin the shortcut to your desktop for ease of use.
Step 2. Upload the video to the program
On PC, select AVI video files to convert to DVD format. To do this, click the button "Add", which is located on the left sidebar. The program provides the ability to download both single files and entire folders with videos. The software freely reads any formats, including AVI, and processes data at high speed.
Add files for work
Step 3. How to Convert AVI to DVD?
Open the writer DVD drive on your PC and insert a blank DVD. In the lower right corner click on the button "Burn DVD". After this you need to select DVD menu type. The program allows you to edit the menu to your liking. You can add text and pictures, and change the background background.
A nice bonus is the ability to add music and select the duration of the menu display. The created menu can be saved as a template for later use. Why create a DVD menu? You can quickly and conveniently get to the desired video file on the disk. After preparing the menu, you must press the button "Further".
Select DVD Menu Type
The next step is to choose disk and folder for recording. There are two options here:
- Convert AVI to DVD and burn the disc at the same time. To go this route, check the box next to “Burn to disk.”
- Create a DVD folder and ISO image for lazy DVD burning using Windows tools.
Select the drive and folder to burn DVD
After that, set the DVD burning settings. Here you will need to decide on the DVD standard and set the required quality level for the video you are recording. After setting all parameters, click the button "Further". Immediately after this, the program will start the conversion procedure. Creating a video takes a little time. The recording speed depends on the size of the files that you transferred to the program for conversion.
The format of movies recorded on DVD is inconvenient for everyday use, especially for those who like to watch movies on mobile devices. A good solution for such users would be to convert the disc to AVI format, which is recognized by most available devices.
To solve the problem we are interested in, we cannot do without special converter programs. The most suitable for solving this problem are Format Factory and Freemake Video Converter.
Method 1: Format Factory
Format Factory is one of the most popular applications for converting many files. Among the program's functions is the ability to convert DVD to AVI.
- Insert the movie disc into the drive or mount the image into a virtual DVD-ROM. After that, open the Format Factory and click on the item “ROM Device\DVD\CD\ISO”.
Next, select an option "DVD to video". - The converter utility will launch. First, select the drive with the source disc.
Then you need to mark the videos from the disk that you want to convert to AVI. To do this, check the boxes next to the required files.
After that, find the output format settings on the right side of the window. Select an option from the drop-down list "AVI".
If required, use additional settings (button "Tune"), edit audio tracks, subtitles and file names. - To start the conversion process, click the button "Start".
The converter utility will close and you will be returned to the main program window. Select an existing task in the work area with the mouse and click on the button "Start". - The selected videos will begin converting to AVI format. Progress can be tracked in the column "State".
- When the conversion is complete, the program will notify you with a message on the taskbar and a sound signal. Click "Destination Folder" to go to the directory with the result of the conversion.
Format Factory copes well with the task, however, the speed of the program, especially on weak computers, leaves much to be desired.
Method 2: Freemake Video Converter
Freemake Video Converter is another functional converter that can solve the problem of converting DVD to AVI.
- Open the program and click on the button "DVD" to select the source drive.
- In the directory selection window "Conductor" select the drive with the desired DVD.
- After loading the data into the program, click on the button "in AVI" at the bottom of the working window.
- The Conversion Options utility will open. If necessary, change the conversion settings and destination folder, then click the button "Convert" to start the procedure.
- The conversion progress can be tracked in a separate window.
After completing the procedure, the program will give you a message, in it you should click "OK". - From the progress window you can access the previously selected folder for saving the converted file.
Freemake Video Converter works quickly and quite efficiently, but is more picky about the state of the source disk - if it encounters reading errors, the program will interrupt the process.
