In this review, I decided to move from flagships to a review of more budget models, since not everyone needs to buy smartphones from the premium segment. My choice fell on a rather interesting model samsung galaxy Grand 2 Duos SM-G7102, which I will review below.
Unboxing
The smartphone has the usual Samsung box made of environmentally friendly recycled paper textured like wood, as in the Samsung Galaxy TREND, Samsung Galaxy Core Duos and Samsung Galaxy Ace 3 models. If you regularly read reviews on the blog, you must have noticed my dislike for this box design, which is already boring and boring. But if you think about it, then on budget models such an “economical” box is forgivable, but not like in such flagships as Samsung Galaxy S5 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4.
In the box along with the device are also:
Documentation and quick start guide;
Headphones (tablets);
DATA cable microUSB-USB;
Charger.
I note that the battery is removed from the device and is supplied in the kit. What also pleasantly surprised me was the presence of headphones. Based on previous reviews of budget models, headphones were not included in their package, when they were unexpectedly included in the Galaxy Grand 2 Duos. Nevertheless, these budget headphones are tablets, not earbuds, and even 12 thousand rubles is a relatively budget price for a smartphone, one can even say that it is close to average.
Specifications
Galaxy Grand 2 Duos has the following options:
Display: 5.25 inch TFT, resolution 1280×720 pixels, 280 ppi;
Processor: 2-core 1.2 GHz;
RAM: 1.5 GB;
Memory: 8 GB (supports memory cards up to 64 GB);
Operating system: Android 4.3, with built-in TouchWiz add-on;
Camera: main - 8 MP (with flash), front camera - 1.9 MP;
Network: GSM/GPRS/EDGE, 3G (21 Mbit/s), dual microSIM support;
Internet: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0;
Navigation: GLONASS, GPS;
Battery: 2600 mAh;
Dimensions and weight: 146.8×75.3×8.9 mm, 163 g.
Let's analyze the parameters of the smartphone.
Screen. The screen resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels, given the diagonal of 5.25 inches, is, of course, not enough, but do not forget that this is a budget segment, and therefore such screen parameters are very personal.
Processor and RAM. This tandem will provide, let's say, comfortable operation of the device. A processor with 2 cores is the minimum for today, but enough to perform all the necessary tasks. As for RAM, such a cropped version of 1.5 GB was incomprehensible to me, of course, it's better than 1 GB, but it's too sparing on the part of developers to increase it by the minimum 0.5 GB, 2 GB would be just right.
Memory. With memory, everything is typical for the budget segment - the minimum 8 GB, which, if necessary, the user himself can expand using memory cards.
Network. The presence of a 4G module in budget smartphones is still out of the question due to a number of factors in order to promote flagships now, luring this opportunity, and it is unlikely that users of budget devices need high-speed and expensive fourth-generation Internet - the main thing here is rationality. Support for two SIMs in our time is a very necessary and useful thing that is implemented in this model, while in talk mode you can use only one card.
Camera. 8 MP is pretty good for a budget phone, it takes pictures at a resolution of 3264x2448 pixels, while their quality is very good. Not to mention the flash. The camera shoots video at 1080p resolution. The front camera of 1.9 MP is a rational solution for video calls and selfies.
Battery. The battery capacity will allow you to work offline:
7 hours when watching HD video;
1 day with active use;
2-3 days on the phone and moderate internet and app usage.
It should be understood that the Galaxy Grand 2 Duos is a budget model, so many of its shortcomings are forgivable.
Appearance and description
Externally, the device is quite nice. The plastic of the back panel is stylized under the skin, but the developers bothered with its design and textures differently than with the flagships, this is understandable. According to tactile sensations, the back of the Galaxy Grand 2 Duos is quite slippery, which I didn’t like very much, but the device lies well in the hand.
On the right side of the device is the power button, on the left - the volume rocker. The headphone jack is on the top and the microUSB port is on the bottom. On the front, above the display, there is a speaker, a front camera and a light sensor, at the bottom there are three buttons: in the center there is a mechanical one - “Home”, and two touch buttons “List of applications” and “Back”. On the back, the main camera flaunts on top, on the sides of which there is a flash and the main speaker.
The screen of the device is quite bright, but the brightness is clearly not enough in the sun. The sensor responds well to feedback. Despite the presence of an oleophobic coating, it is better to stick a protective film on the screen.
For a visual acquaintance with the device, I recommend watching a short video review.
Model analysis
There is still a slowdown at some points, sometimes the smartphone freezes, of course, it saddened me a little: what was it, a firmware flaw or a hardware miscalculation, I still didn’t figure it out, I hope that it’s still the firmware, and Android 4.4 will fix it . By the way, for this firmware, the device will offer to update immediately. I was pleased with the presence of a multi-window mode, when the screen narrows, and a panel for switching between applications appears on the side.
There is some graininess on the screen, it's not very good, but again, the budget. Games and HD-video device confidently pulls, as well as most applications from the standard list. For those who are not used to a high-resolution screen, graininess will not even be noticeable.
I liked the pictures taken by the device, a very decent result for a model from this segment. Video is shot in 1080p, such an opportunity is beyond praise.
Purchase feasibility
The model has a lot of competitors, the budget segment of smartphones is quite crowded nowadays, but it was very difficult to find and offer a really best option, since they are almost the same in price and parameters. Although, the Fly IQ455 Octa Ego Art 2 Black option, with 8 cores and 1 GB of RAM, for 7,990 rubles, looks much more interesting for the price, although you need to understand that FLY is not Samsung, the price difference will be clear in the operation of the device.
In general, for those who do not need a flagship, this is a very good model: 2 SIM cards allow you to save on mobile communications(having cheap calls and cheap mobile internet at the same time), and good technical parameters and Android will ensure comfortable work and installation of a large number of applications. With an average intensity of use, the battery will last for 2 days.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 Duos is a real workhorse.
The device is sold in two colors: white or black. The warranty is 12 months.
Galaxy Grand 2 SM-G7102. The novelty can be called long-awaited, as its announcement took place in November last year. The device retains the common features characteristic of the Galaxy line, and at the same time, the phone has quite powerful technical specifications. One of the important advantages of a smartphone is the use of two SIM cards at the same time.
Case Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 classic, it is made in the form of a rectangle with rounded edges. Despite the large dimensions, the phone is quite comfortable in the hand and easy to manage. At the moment, only the white version is on sale, later a black plastic model will go on sale. Along the edges of the smartphone is a rim of a shiny chrome frame. As in most Galaxy models, the power and volume buttons are located on the right and left ends. The headphone jack is on the top of the phone, while the micro-USB port is on the bottom of the phone. On the front side of the phone there are control buttons: two touch and one mechanical.
Back cover as in Galaxy Note 3 is framed under the skin, which in general looks quite attractive and has not yet become pleasing to the user. On the back cover of the phone there is a camera window and a speaker grille.
Galaxy Grand 2 measures 146.9 x 75.3 x 8.9mm and weighs 163g.
Performance and software
Our test smartphone passes well and shows a result above average. The Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 G7102 smartphone is equipped with a Qualcomm MSM8226 Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, with a frequency of 1.2 GHz per core and an Adreno 305 graphics system. The amount of RAM in the new product is 1.5 GB. internal memory- 8 GB, the device also supports the installation of a memory slot up to 64 GB. These parameters are more than enough to use any applications and games.
The new model is controlled by Android 4.3 operating system. Installed proprietary interface from Samsung - TouchWiz.
The user has the ability to create seven desktops and place widgets and application icons on them. And also, for the first time, the possibility of multitasking appeared, now you can open 2 applications at the same time on the screen and, for example, copy photos from the gallery directly to the mail application.
The model is equipped with Wi-Fi, GPS/GLONASS and Bluetooth modules. Wi-Fi keeps the signal well and without interruptions, there are no problems with data transfer. Unfortunately LTE is missing.
The device supports two SIM cards (micro-SIM), you can switch between them from the notification menu. It is possible to set priorities for SIM cards, that is, you can use one for calls and use the other for data transfer.
Screen
Compared to its predecessor, the Grand 2, the display is much better. The screen is a 5.25-inch TFT panel with a resolution of 1280x720. Screen colors are bright and saturated. The image is perfectly visible in the sun, regardless of the viewing angle.
Camera
The phone has two cameras: front and rear. The front camera is absolutely ordinary and has a resolution of 1.9 megapixels. The resolution of the matrix of the main camera is 8 megapixels. The camera is equipped with autofocus and LED flash. The camera takes high-quality photos with a resolution of 3264 × 2448 and records video in Full HD. Like other Galaxy models, the camera has several shooting modes.
A few examples of how the Galaxy Grand 2 camera shoots.
Battery
The capacity of the battery installed in the Samsung Galaxy Grand 2 smartphone is 2600 mAh. With active use of the device, playing games, using applications, and performing other operations, a full charge of the battery will last approximately one day. With an average load level, the phone will work for about two days without recharging. It takes about three hours to fully charge the battery.
Compared to the previous version, the smartphone has become better in terms of performance and battery capacity. The design has changed a little for the better - back cover took on a prettier look. With these changes, I am glad that the price of the device differs from the first version by about 80 dollars.
Having released flagship models, Samsung eventually uses their design for smartphones that are lower in the line in status. The manufacturer used the same approach in the Galaxy Grand 2 model, which received design elements familiar to us from the Galaxy Note 3. Let's see if the "flagship" design helps this dual SIM smartphone.
Design and construction
There is nothing unusual in comparison with the design of other Samsung models in the Galaxy Grand 2. The company continues to exploit an already proven approach when it uses design elements from flagship devices for its line of smartphones. So the Grand 2 looks like the Galaxy S4 from the front.
And its back cover is decorated in the same style "under the skin" as in the Galaxy Note 3.
The main material of the Grand 2 is plastic, which is used for the entire base of the case, as well as a removable cover that provides access to the battery, two SIM cards, and a slot for expanding microSD memory.
The lid is quite easy to remove and bend very easily, although in the assembled state it is not felt at all, the body looks monolithic.
While the back cover design is similar to that of the Note 3, the Galaxy Grand 2's back cover is made of a harder plastic that is quite slippery.
The entire front panel of the smartphone is covered with protective glass, under which there is a 5.25-inch display.
The arrangement of controls and connectors in the Galaxy Grand 2 is standard for Samsung smartphones. On the right side of the device is a button to turn on the screen.
And on the left is the volume rocker.
At the bottom you can find the microUSB port.
On the top is a 3.5mm headphone jack.
On the front panel below the display are two touch buttons, as well as one mechanical.
On the back of the smartphone is an 8-megapixel camera window, a flash, and an external speaker grille.
In general, the Galaxy Grand 2 is comfortable to use, despite its size, it fits well in the hand.
Platform and Performance
The Galaxy Grand 2 is powered by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8226 Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor and an Adreno 305 graphics chip. All this is complemented by 1.5 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded by another 64 GB through microSD cards. These characteristics are more than enough for comfortable use of the smartphone, both in programs and in games. In the AnTuTu test, the Galaxy Grand 2 scored 16,923 points. Larger than the Nexus 4 and slightly smaller than the Galaxy S3.
Wi-Fi in the Galaxy Grand 2 works with a/b/g/n standards. At the same time, the device catches the signal well, the plastic case plays into its hands. For all the time of use, there were no problems with data transfer over a wireless network.
Navigation using a smartphone can be carried out using the GPS / GLONASS module. The Galaxy Grand 2 also has no problems with determining the position.
Display
The Galaxy Grand 2 uses a 5.25-inch TFT touchscreen display with a resolution of 1280x720 pixels (280 ppi). Despite not the highest resolution, with a diagonal of more than 5 inches, the picture on the screen does not look grainy.
In addition, the display has good viewing angles and good color reproduction.
As such, there are no display settings in the smartphone, the user can only adjust its brightness.
Camera
The camera in the Galaxy Grand 2 is 8-megapixel with autofocus and LED flash. It can take pictures at a resolution of 3264×2448 pixels and record videos in Full HD. The quality of the camera shots is on par with previous Samsung models with 8-megapixel modules, it takes good pictures in good lighting and loses a lot of detail in bad ones.
Traditionally for Samsung smartphones, you can choose one of several shooting modes in the camera settings.
Software
Works Galaxy Grand 2 under the control of the operating Android systems 4.3 with proprietary interface Samsung TouchWiz. No changes . The user can still create up to seven desktops, place application icons and widgets on them.
The main menu consists of a table of icons, which can also be switched to a list.
The set of settings in the smartphone is also standard for Samsung devices. It includes four tabs for quick navigation.
Of the software features that were not previously available in Samsung models of this price category, it is worth highlighting the My Magazine function.
It is called up by moving your finger from the bottom edge of the display upwards and allows you to adjust and read a variety of news feeds.
The built-in virtual keyboard in the Galaxy Grand 2 supports seamless swype input.
Work with two SIM-cards
Galaxy Grand 2 can use two micro-SIM cards for calls and data transfer. The slots for them are located under the back cover, and you need to remove the battery to install them.
The slots are numbered, this numbering is used in the smartphone interface so that the user can choose from which SIM card to call or send a message.
You can switch between SIM cards directly from the notification panel.
And in the settings there are options for setting priorities. For example, you can use one card for data transfer and another for calls. During an incoming call, the smartphone automatically switches to the SIM card to which the call is being made.
The speaker in the Galaxy Grand 2 has a good volume, and although the smartphone does not have an active noise reduction system, you can hear the interlocutor even in noisy places. A loud external speaker and a powerful vibrating alert will not let you miss an incoming call.
autonomy
The battery capacity of the Galaxy Grand 2 is 2600 mAh, which is enough for a little more than one day of smartphone operation in medium load conditions.
Eventually
The Galaxy Grand 2 doesn't stand out for its special design or cutting-edge features. Nevertheless, it can be argued that Samsung managed to create a balanced smartphone for the middle price category. The device copes well with its tasks, while its capabilities are enough not to feel on the sidelines of technological progress.
